Some stuff I have enjoyed recently, and a Left Coast Crime update
Taking a break from the vitriol...
Last week I wrote a very angry post, which you can read at this link, so as a palette cleanser, here are some things I enjoyed recently…
You Know What You Did by KT Nguyen: So intricate and self-assured it’s hard to believe this book is a debut. Fantastic domestic suspense tackling stuff like mental health and emigration. Loved it. KT is also super cool just FYI. Find it here.
Severance: Is this the best show on TV? Not while The Great British Bake Off endures. But this is up there. I haven’t experienced this kind of mind-fuckery and excitement since Lost.
Godzilla Minus One: Great. I haven’t gotten around to watching the more recent American Godzilla movies because despite King Kong’s robot arm, or maybe because of it, they look a little too silly. This was a really smart take on the mythos.
Flow: What a gorgeous, gorgeous movie. Deserving of the Oscar. A little too cerebral for the kids (11 and 10), but absolutely worth your time. Pure cinema.
Project Wolf Hunting: This is a Korean horror action science fiction movie that makes no fucking sense and has no character development and features more blood than I’ve ever seen in a single movie and I loved every second of it. It’s insane. I’m not even going to say anything more about it. Go into it cold, if you have the stomach.
*I’ve been a little behind on my reading, in part because I got the flu, which screwed with my work schedule and set me back a few weeks, but I’ve got some cool books on my TBR pile, so more of that soon.
Just a reminder, Bouchercon attendees: Assassins Anonymous is eligible for Best Hardcover Novel and if you would consider writing it in on your ballot, I’d be much obliged.
(This message for people eligible to nominate in the Anthony Awards, which means you either went to Bouchercon last year, or you’re going this year…)
Speaking of Bouchercon, that convention’s smaller, West Coast-only cousin, Left Coast Crime, kicks off on Wednesday. Or Thursday. I don’t know. I get there Thursday.
It’s in Denver, and Assassins is nominated for a Lefty for Best Novel, which is cool, and if you’re going and want to vote for me, I won’t be mad.
I’ll be on the following panels:
Lefty Best Novel Nominees, Friday @ 11:30 a.m., with moderator Wendall Thomas and panelists Claire Booth, Margot Douaihy, Leslie Karst, James L'Etoile, and Duane Swierczynski
The Craft of Writing, Saturday @ 1:30 p.m., with moderator Margaret Lucke and panelists Ellen Byron AKA Maria DiRicio, Nina Simon, and Duane Swierczynski.
I don’t know where they’re going to be, so check out the program when you get there. If I’m not there or sleeping, I will be in the hotel bar!
Okay that’s all for now!
Have a blast and good luck!
This is a great post, Rob! See ya in Denver.
